In Profile: BodyPower Throwback Thursday Winner Alan Fitton

Last week, BodyPower ran an online competition to be featured on – and our winner was 29-year-old PT Alan Fitton from Southport!

Alan was judged to have the best transformation pictures from hundreds sent in to us and we’re delighted to be able to bring his story to the fore.

After a relatively inactive childhood and a self-confessed disregard for healthy eating, Alan hit rock bottom by the age of 23 when he was 18 stone and suffering with a crisis of self-confidence.

“I hated myself and my body,” Alan explained. “I used to hide in my room playing games so I didn't have to feel uncomfortable or be embarrassed of how big I was in public. No matter what I wore I’d always feel fat. Everything always clung to me and showed my horrid shape…I had a really low self-esteem and no confidence whatsoever.”

A lot of people pin their lifestyle change on a significant event in their life. A moment that was a catalyst for change. For Alan, he just got fed up with his own reflection and decided to do something about it.

“I woke up. I was tired of being big, sluggish and having no energy all the time so I finally decided to do something about it. I started learning about healthier food and better lifestyle choices. I stopped snacking and fizzy drinks all together!”

A new job brought a new routine. Alan cycled to work every day and began eating 3 nutritious meals daily. He replaced tea, coffee and fizzy drinks with water and kept his fatty food and high sugar intake down to a minimum – with instant results.

“My first year I lost a total of 5 stone just through changing my eating habits and being more active.

Then the next year I re-assessed my goals as I started to plateau with weight loss so I joined a gym and began running outdoors also.”

The numbers were incredible. Alan lost a further 2 stone – getting his weight stripped back to 11 stone. His waist went from a 44 down to a 32 and his t-shirt from an XXL to a small.

His success led to a change not only in lifestyle, but also in career. Stripped of the fat that had plagued his self-confidence, Alan began weight training and fell in love with the results. So, he became a personal trainer!

“I’d fallen in love with fitness so much I wanted to help others achieve what I have through my experiences and journey. I don't really see it as a job to be perfectly honest I love my work and helping everyone on their own journey.”

That isn’t where the story ends. Alan used his new-found confidence to the full, taking to the stage in a Men’s Physique show.

“Just getting up on that stage for me was a massive hurdle from being too scared to show any part of me in public when I was overweight, no words can describe how emotional and proud I felt.”

Alan will take to the stage again as part of the BodyPower Model Search at BodyPower Expo 2017.

"I have a firm belief that everyone knows what healthy eating is. Fad diets don’t work as it’s a temporary fix! If you just change small things in your daily eating habits that can make a massive difference. My philosophy on fitness is it’s not a race, it’s a marathon you should be striving to be the best version of YOU.”

Great words from a great transformation story – let’s hope Alan inspires many more to take the same steps!
