Beetroot, Carrot, Lemon & Ginger Juice: ‘BEET DOMS’

This is one of my all-time favourite juices and it has even been known as the ‘Miracle Drink’ due to the numerous benefits it has on your brain and body! It has a slightly earthy, yet deliciously sweet flavour to it. It is packed with Vitamins A, K, beta carotene from the carrots, vitamin C and polyphenols from the apples, and antioxidants and folate from the beets. The ginger will provide you with anti-inflammatory benefits. This makes it a great choice in the fight against DOMS and I honestly feel it speeds up my recovery after a heavy workout. However, beetroot juice has also been found to help improve endurance so works great prior to a race or a run too!

Over the past few years, the popularity of beetroot juice has grown commercially due to the research behind its effects on sports performance. You may have come across ‘Beet It’ before, which you can find in supermarkets and health stores like Holland & Barrett. They have produced a whole host of scientific research to prove how the properties in beetroot can effect sports performance and are now selling a range of juices and concentrated shots aimed at the fitness world*(1). Generally, the benefits revolve around the nitrates in this superfood, which are converted to Nitric Oxide by the enzymes in saliva, enhancing blood flow and therefore boosting endurance and helping to treat hypertension.


So give this juice a go and see if it helps improve your performance like it did for Channel 4’s ‘Food Unwrapped’ presenter Kate Quilton who saw her general performance increase by 4% and her cycling for an additional 30 seconds longer*(2).

Ingredients:

4 Carrots

4 Beetroots (Raw)

1 Lemon

1 Thumb of Ginger (I use a big chunk)

Method:

Place ingredients in your juicer. I like to add the ginger and lemon first, followed by the beetroot and carrot as I feel this pushed through everything much better making sure you capture all of the goodness!
